thousand guineasThe 2017 Thousand Guineas is set to run on Saturday 14th October 2017 at Caulfield racecourse in Melbourne, Victoria.

A $500,000 Group 1 race, the Thousand Guineas (1600m) is the Melbourne Racing Club’s premier three-year-old event for fillies and takes place on the same day as the $1,000,000 Group 1 Caulfield Guineas for colts & geldings.

The Thousand Guineas has proven to be a wonderful breeding ground for top class mares over the years with quality gallopers Atlantic Jewel, Miss Finland, Alinghi, Special Harmony, Shankhill Lass and Toy Show all winning this race.

In 2014, the Melbourne Racing Club announced the $500,000 Group 3 Caulfield Classic, formerly the Norman Robinson Stakes, to be run on Caulfield Cup day on the final day of the Caulfield carnival.

Any three-year-old who can win the Thousand Guineas or Caulfield Guineas and then take out the Caulfield Classic the following Saturday is eligible for a $500,000 bonus.

The Group 1 Caulfield Stakes and Group 1 Toorak Handicap are held alongside the Thousand Guineas & Caulfield Guineas on one of the biggest race days of the spring.

2017 Thousand Guineas Day

Thousand Guineas day is held alongside the Caulfield Guineas on the first day of the three-day Caulfield spring racing carnival.

Blue Sapphire day is up next for the Melbourne Racing Club on the following Wednesday, before the highlight of the Caulfield carnival takes centre stage three days later with the running of the $3,000,000 Group 1 Caulfield Cup over 2400 metres on Caulfield Cup Day.

The 2017 Caulfield Cup Carnival dates are listed below:

  • Caulfield Guineas Day – Saturday 14th October 2017 (Day 1)
  • Blue Sapphire Day – Wednesday 18th October 2017 (Day 2)
  • Caulfield Cup Day – Saturday 21st October 2017 (Day 3)

2016 Thousand Guineas result

Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott trained filly Global Glamour won the 2015 Thousand Guineas defeating I Am A Star by one length, with Whispering Brook a further 0.20 lengths away in third place.

Global Glamour, a daughter of Star Witness, was ridden by jockey Kerrin McEvoy and she ran the trip in a time of 1:36.84. Her starting price on the day was $4.40.
