Caulfield Classic

caulfield classicThe 2018 Caulfield Classic is scheduled to run on Saturday 20th October 2018 at Caulfield Racecourse in Melbourne, Victoria.

Formerly known the Norman Robinson Stakes, the race was renamed the ‘Caulfield Classic’ and run for the first time in 2014 under its new name.

Caulfield based galloper Fontein Ruby won the first edition of the Caulfield Classic defeating Crafty and Firehouse Rock.

The Darren Weir trained Cliff’s Edge is the most recent Caulfield Classic winner with Good Standing (2016) and Sacred Eye (2015) prior to that.

The race is run over 2000 metres under set weight conditions and provides the ideal lead up to the Group 1 Victoria Derby (2500m) at Flemington in November.

Any three-year-olds that contest either the $2,000,000 Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) for colts & geldings or the $500,000 Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) for fillies the previous Saturday, can then tackle the Caulfield Classic the following week.

The step up from the 1600 metres of the Guineas to the 2000 metres of this race gives staying types the perfect platform for longer spring races ahead during the Moonee Valley and Flemington carnivals.
