2017 Caulfield Guineas Preview and Odds – Royal Symphony favourite

Royal SymphonyA capacity field will contest the 2017 Caulfield Guineas at Caulfield tomorrow and Tony McEvoy three-year-old Royal Symphony is the one to beat according to punters.

Royal Symphony, to be ridden by Dwayne Dunn, is $4.20 favourite at online bookmaker Ladbrokes, ahead of Lindsay Park filly Catchy $4.60 and Godolphin colt Kementari $5.00.

Domesday colt Royal Symphony tasted defeat for the first time when 4th in the Group 3 Caulfield Guineas Prelude (1400m) two weeks ago at Caulfield.

The boom galloper got a long way out of his ground in that race before running home strongly in the straight to finish just under 4 lengths behind winner Perast.

Stepping up to 1600 metres looks ideal for the Guineas favourite and punters at Ladbrokes are expecting him to go close this time around.

Second favourite Catchy, from the in form David & Ben Hayes & Tom Dabernig yard, takes on the colts & geldings and looks a genuine chance in a race traditionally dominated by males.

Mark Zahra takes the ride and appears to be crying out for extra ground.

Kementari, from the James Cummings put the writing on the wall in the Guineas prelude and has the services of Damian Lane.

Others in the mix include Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott colt Gold Standard $9.00, Paul Perry’s Perast $10.00, Hawkes trained Showtime $11.00.

We highly recommend Ladbrokes for betting on the Caulfield Guineas.

The 2017 Caulfield Guineas is Race 8 on the Caulfield card and start time is set down for 4.30pm in the afternoon.

The following odds are courtesy of Luxbet and subject to change.

1 The Mission $34.00

Record: 11:2-1-1 Prizemoney:$418,425
Track: 0:0-0-0 Dist: 2:1-0-0

Finished 3.3L from Showtime in the Group 2 Stutt Stakes (1600) at the Valley after leading and will be cherry ripe for this. Worth noting he won the Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m) over this trip at Randwick in the autumn. Could be the value being a Group 1 winner over the mile, although wide draw won’t help his chances.

Thoughts: Great each-way bet if race run to suit.

Trainer: Paul Perry Jockey: Beau Mertens 56.5kg (a) Barrier:11

2 Summer Passage

3 Azazel $51.00

Record: 8:2-1-0 Prizemoney:$260,150
Track: 2:0-1-0 Dist: 1:0-0-0

Improving type from astute stable and another who could be value for the exotics. Ran home nicely in last two outings in the Group 2 Danehill Stakes (1200m) and Group 2 Stutt Stakes (1600m), beaten 2.35L and 3.5L respectively, and appears to be looking for more distance.

Thoughts: Looks a better hope than his odds suggest.

Trainer: Tony McEvoy Jockey: Luke Currie 56.5kg Barrier:4

4 Sircconi $41.00

Record: 7:2-1-1 Prizemoney:$251,700
Track: 1:1-0-0 Dist: 0:0-0-0

Honest type who won at his only start at this track two starts ago over 1400m before a battling third in Listed class at Flemington over the same trip. Won the Group 2 VRC Sires Produce Stakes at Flemington in the autumn before heading to Sydney to run 4th (btn 4.2L) behind Invader in the Group 1 ATC Sires Produce Stakes (1400m).

Thoughts: Wide gate makes it tough and not convinced over this trip against some of these.

Trainer: Peter Morgan Jockey: Ms Linda Meech 56.5kg Barrier:13

5 Showtime $11.00

Record: 9:2-3-1 Prizemoney:$238,730
Track: 0:0-0-0 Dist: 1:1-0-0

Ridden a treat by Beau Mertens to win the Group 2 Stutt Stakes (1600m) in impressive style last start and will jump from the inside gate here. Improving with every run and drawn to get the run of the race.

Thoughts: In form, winner at the trip, and drawn nicely. Three big ticks!

Trainer: Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes Jockey: Damien Oliver 56.5kg Barrier:1

6 Royal Symphony $4.20

Record: 5:4-0-0 Prizemoney:$223,025
Track: 1:0-0-0 Dist: 1:1-0-0

Failed to flatter in Group 3 Caulfield Guineas Prelude (1400m) last time out, but was by no means disgraced, hitting the line in his usual strong fashion to be beaten just 3.45 lengths. Just found three better on the day and will be better for the Caulfield outing, along with the step up to 1600 metres. One thing for sure, he will be hitting the line strongly and he’ll have a few jockeys looking over their shoulders in the final stanza.

Thoughts: Will run a solid 1600m and that’s whats required in this race. The one to beat over this trip!

Trainer: Tony McEvoy (Flemington) Jockey: Dwayne Dunn 56.5kg Barrier:9

7 Gold Standard $9.00

Record: 5:2-2-0 Prizemoney:$230,250
Track: 0:0-0-0 Dist: 0:0-0-0

Top winner of the Group 2 Stan Fox Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill before a sound 4th in the Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m) at the same track. Honest performer yet to run a bad race and in capable hands of the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott stable. The six alley is a bonus and he appears one for the multiples.

Thoughts: Form solid for this, especially when you consider he finished almost a couple of lengths ahead of Perast in the Golden Rose. Some query at the trip, but in the mix and one for the exotics.

Trainer: Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott Jockey: Stephen Baster 56.5kg Barrier:6

8 Perast $10.00

Record: 8:2-0-2 Prizemoney:$181,000
Track: 2:1-0-1 Dist: 0:0-0-0

Impressive winner of the Group 3 Caulfield Guineas Prelude (1400m) last start when enjoyed a cosy run on the pace and drawn to get the run of the race once again. Yet to be tested beyond 1400m but outstanding at this track last start and good gate gives him every chance to prove his worth.

Thoughts: Prelude win was first class and barrier two will have him in this race for a long way. Great chance at double figure odds.

Trainer: Paul Perry Jockey: Ben Melham 56.5kg Barrier:2

9 Sanctioned $26.00

Record: 6:1-2-2 Prizemoney:$147,150
Track: 0:0-0-0 Dist: 0:0-0-0

Amassing a good record and solid 1.8L second to Gold Standard in the Stan Fox Stakes was followed by a close-up 2nd and 4th respectively in the Group 3 Gloaming Stakes (1800m) at Rosehill and Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) at Randwick. Fit and in form but from the outside gate will find it tough.

Thoughts: Honest galloper who will give a good account of himself.

Trainer: James Cummings (Flemington) Jockey: Glyn Schofield 56.5kg Barrier:16

10 Al Passem $126.00

Record: 6:2-1-0 Prizemoney:$99,100
Track: 3:1-1-0 Dist: 0:0-0-0

Solid form at Caulfield but well held when beaten more than 7 lengths in the Caulfield Guineas Prelude (1400m) last start. Will find this tougher and barrier 12 does him no favours.

Thoughts: Looking to others.

Trainer: Ken Keys Jockey: Ben Thompson 56.5kg (a) Barrier:12

11 Kementari $5.00

Record: 4:1-1-1 Prizemoney:$106,650
Track: 1:0-0-1 Dist: 0:0-0-0

Very good run in the Group 3 Caulfield Guineas Prelude (1400m) at Caulfield behind Perast when hit the line in good style. Enjoyed the run of the race though in third place on the fence so was entitled to figure in the finish. May not get it so easy this time from gate 10 but definitely in the mix after two solid runs this time in.

Thoughts: Looks a solid chance on last run.

Trainer: James Cummings Jockey: Damian Lane 56.5kg Barrier:10

12 Eclair Sunshine $41.00

Record: 7:1-4-0 Prizemoney:$72,175
Track: 1:0-0-0 Dist: 0:0-0-0

Honest effort when 2nd to Royal Symphony two starts back in Listed class at Flemington over 1400m before fair 5th in the Caulfield Guineas Prelude (1400m) last time out. In astute stable who know how to pull off an upset at major carnivals, but wide gate against him here.

Thoughts: One for the multiples

Trainer: Phillip Stokes Jockey: Luke Nolen 56.5kg Barrier:14

13 Salsamor $26.00

Record: 4:1-3-0 Prizemoney:$70,900 1st Up: 2:1-1-0 2nd Up: 2:0-2-0
Track: 0:0-0-0 Dist: 1:0-1-0

Done little wrong to date and fair effort last time out when runner-up to Showtime in Group 2 Stutt Stakes (1600m), finishing just ahead of Holy Snow. Got home as if the mile would suit and good draw here will suit. Add Brad Rawiller and this fellow is one for the value punters.

Thoughts: Outside chance with right run.

Trainer: Trent Busuttin & Natalie Young (Cranbourne) Jockey: Brad Rawiller 56.5kg Barrier:8

14 Levendi $20.00

Record: 3:2-0-0 Prizemoney:$38,150
Track: 1:0-0-0 Dist: 0:0-0-0

Interesting runner from the smart Gelagotis stable at Moe. Top winner at Mornington over subsequent Flemington winner Snitzepeg before even effort in the Caulfield Guineas Prelude last time out. Ran home nicely in that race to finish hot on the heels of Royal Symphony and races as though this journey will be ideal.

Thoughts: Good gate and looks a sound each-way chance at nice odds

Trainer: Peter Gelagotis Jockey: Anthony Darmanin 56.5kg Barrier:7

15 Holy Snow $31.00

Record: 4:1-1-1 Prizemoney:$35,135
Track: 0:0-0-0 Dist: 1:0-0-1

Best run outside the winner in the Group 2 Stutt Stakes (1600m) when hit the line hard after coming from a long way back before the turn. in good hands for this assignment but barrier 15 not ideal. May not worry him too much as likely to be back in the field. Worth noting he ran 4th to Royal Symphony on debut at Pakenham back in May, although beaten almost 8 lengths.

Thoughts: Improving type who could figure in the placings with the right run.

Trainer: Mick Price (Caulfield) Jockey: Michael Dee 56.5kg Barrier:15

16 Catchy $4.60

Record: 8:5-1-1 Prizemoney:$1,269,000
Track: 5:3-1-1 Dist: 0:0-0-0

Classy Filly who won the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) back in the autumn and her three runs this campaign have been full of merit. Produced a big finish to defeat the boys in the Group 2 Danehill Stakes (1200m) at Flemington before running on resolutely for third in the Group 2 Blue Diamond Prelude (1400m) against the fillies last start. Shapes as though the 1600m will suit her down to the ground and has the benefit of an inside gate to aid her chances.

Thoughts: From top stable and she knows how to win. Top chance!

Trainer: David & B Hayes & T Dabernig Jockey: Mark Zahra 54.5kg Barrier:3

17e Mighty Boss $61.00

Record: 5:1-1-0 Prizemoney:$31,250 1st Up: 2:1-0-0 2nd Up: 1:0-1-0
Track: 1:0-0-0 Dist: 1:0-0-0

Stablemate of Holy Snow and gets a run with the scratching of Summer Passage. Finished 4 lengths behind Royal Symphony over 1400m at Flemington two starts ago before less than 2 lengths from Showtime in the Stutt Stakes. Good draw and good jockey but prefer others.

Thoughts: Fair last time but but looks out of his depth here.

Trainer: Mick Price Jockey: Michael Walker 56.5kg Barrier:5
