2016 Blue Sapphire Stakes field, preview and odds

The 2016 Blue Sapphire Stakes is the feature race at Caulfield on the second day of the Caulfield Cup Carnival on Wednesday.

Mick Price-trained Flying Artie is the clear $2.35 favourite for the race at online bookmaker William Hill.

The dashing son of Artie Schiller has only had the four starts and will be having his first outing since running third in the Group 1 Golden Slipper behind Capitalist and Yankee Rose.

He has drawn perfectly in barrier four and has the services of top jockey Damien Oliver. If Flying Artie is anywhere near right then he’ll take some stopping.

Ken’s Dream is considered his main danger to Flying Artie and is the second favourite at $5.00.

The Darren Weir-trained three-year-old tasted defeat for the first time at Moonee Valley last start when narrowly defeated by Benz over 1200 metres. In form hoop Dean Yendall takes the ride again and barrier five says the Dream Ahead colt will be in it for a long way.

Undefeated Barthelona, from the Michael Moroney yard, is $12 for the Blue Sapphire Stakes. Wins at Sandown and Caulfield this time in have him cherry ripe for his toughest test to date. Ryan Maloney will ride the three-year-old and he will jump from barrier nine.

Merriest is one of two fillies taking on the colts and is $8.00 in Blue Sapphire Stakes betting. Nick Hall will ride the Danny O’Brien-trained galloper and her recent form suggests she will be thereabouts when whips are cracking.

Others in the mix include Lindsay Park pair Highland Beat $21 and Derryn $5.50, while it’s not often a Darren Weir runner gets around at $101, but Dalradian is just that.

The 2016 Blue Sapphire Stakes is Race 6 at Caulfield on Wednesday 12th October 2016 and scheduled to jump at 4.25pm in the afternoon.
